Marmora went to the dogs Oct 1 and 2, 2011! Iron Dog Weight Pull Camping Weekend.
Marmora was host to a weekend of events geared toward Alaskan Malamutes – though all breeds were able to participate. Activities included a weight pull, along with ‘fun’ scooter demonstrations and an afternoon backpacking walk. The second day included demonstrations of various canine certifications, along with a work shop on weight pulling.
Equipment such as dog scooters, dog packs, sledding and weight pull harnesses were available for people to use. Approximately 20 people were on hand, including volunteers, to make two days worth of ‘canine-themed’ activities a success.
People travelled from Almonte, Carleton Place, Brockville, the Peterborough region, around Toronto, Madoc, and – of course – Marmora – and all of which are located in Ontario.
In total, $240.00 was raised. The funds will be divided between the Annual Marmora SnoFest and health funding for Alaskan Malamutes.
Jerry and Linda Roy, of Marmora, Ontario, were instrumental in organizing things from the Marmora / SnoFest side, while many of the ‘working activities’ and equipment requirements were arranged for by Tanya Hawley, Brockville, On.
Jennifer McNaughton shot many pictures during the day, while her husband Brad, served as the weight pull judge. Carrie Huchinson, Lightningbolt Racing Kennel, donated prizes. Their generations donations of time, expertise, and prizes helped ensure the weekend was a success!
The use of the Marmora community center offered a centralized location, which could handle on-site, outdoor activities, but remain in close proximity to the Marmora.
Top pull of the day (and winner of the 81 – 100 pound class) went to 88 pound ‘Ooky’ – a purebred, registered female Alaskan Malamute, with multiple confirmation and working wins to her credit, though this was her first major weight pull win. She pulled 978 pounds.
Highest percentage (most weight pulled based on weight of the dog) was 36 pound ‘Kandi,’ owned by Jerry and Linda Roy of Marmora. Kandi, pulled 610 pounds – 16.9X her weight! Kandi was also winner of the 21 – 40 pound class). Hemi, owned by Tera and Craig Keeling, Carleton Place, was winner of the 61 – 80 pound class.
Two Alaskan Malamutes tied for ‘top novice’ and who are Jasper, owned by Al Seaman, Almonte and Buster, owned by Steve Ferren. Buster pulled 886 pounds at his first pull! All winners received prizes and ribbons.
Winner of a beautiful donated gift basket, was Craig Keeling, Carleton Place, which was donated by Becca’s Pet Emporium of Havelock, ON, dog food samples were also supplied.
